ABOUT
The Jewelers’ Building at 19 S. Wabash Avenue—also known as the Iwan Ries Building—was constructed in 1881–82 for lumber baron Martin Ryerson. Designed by the celebrated architecture duo Dankmar Adler & Louis Sullivan, it is the only surviving early Adler & Sullivan work in Chicago’s Loop. Its façade boldly diverges from typical loft buildings of the era, featuring cast-iron mullions, carved limestone, and Sullivan’s signature floral and natural motifs, marking it as Chicago’s earliest surviving example of Sullivan’s distinct ornamental style. In 1967, the building became home to Iwan Ries & Co., America's fourth-generation family-run pipe and tobacco store, occupying the second floor. The structure proudly stands as a Chicago Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, both since the 1970s, and remains part of the renowned Jewelers’ Row District. Its rich architectural heritage and preserved historic details make 19 S Wabash a cherished gem of Chicago’s architectural legacy.
